Developing a Daily Training Plan for Baseball Camps

Infographic highlights key aspects to consider when forming a baseball camp training plan

Understanding The Kids You Are Working With

A key aspect of building a training program for your camp is understanding the age group of the participants as well as their skill level. A camp for high school athletes will be vastly different from one for 8-12 year olds, requiring tailored approaches for each group.

What Do You Want To Accomplish

A key part of planning the camp is defining what you want the kids to achieve. The goal should be to help them improve their skills and understanding of the game, while also ensuring they have fun. After all, no one wants to attend a camp that’s all work and no enjoyment.

What Skills Do You Want To Improve

To determine what you want to accomplish, start by identifying the athletic skills you want the kids to improve. Choose a few key areas to focus on, then create a plan around those skills. In the next section, we will discuss key skills to help improve these kids’ games.

Key Skills to Focus on in a Baseball Camp or Showcase

Catch Play Skills

Our main focus is improving their catch play. Strengthening their catch and throw abilities is crucial for taking care of the baseball. This is important to get outs and prevent baserunners from advancing.

Fielding Skills

Another key aspect should be to improve the kids’ fielding skills, ensuring they can confidently handle groundballs and catch fly balls. Being able to play good defense and make the routine plays is essential for getting outs, so we’re dedicated to helping them improve their ability to field both groundballs and fly balls.

Hitting Skills

Hitting is one of the most essential skills in baseball. Developing hitters goes beyond just making contact; it’s about teaching them proper mechanics, timing, and approach at the plate. By focusing on fundamentals like stance, grip, and path, we help kids build a strong foundation. Additionally, teaching them to dominate the strike zone, recognize pitches, and knowing the situation, prepares them for real-game situations. Our goal is to ensure they not only make consistent contact but also learn how to drive in runs when it matters most, building their confidence and making them more effective contributors to their team.

Pitching Mechanics

Pitching is a cornerstone of any successful baseball team, and helping young players improve their pitching skills is vital to their overall development. The primary focus should be on refining mechanics and improving command. Emphasizing consistency is key, as throwing strikes puts pressure on the offense and reduces unnecessary baserunners. By building a strong foundation and reinforcing these fundamentals, we prepare young pitchers to confidently face any lineup while keeping their opponents from scoring.

Situational Play

Learning the game of baseball is essential for the kids’ development. For this reason, there is a certain amount of mental training you need to focus on as well. The best way to achieve this is by practicing real game situations as both hitters and fielders. Teaching them through these scenarios helps them understand what they want to do in each situation and what they should look for before every pitch/at bat.

Baserunning

Baserunning is a crucial part of the game, so it’s essential to teach kids effective baserunning skills. Being able to take the extra base and know when to and when not to be aggressive is a huge key to winning games.

Confidence & Teamwork (Mental)

Even at the highest level, confidence plays a crucial role in baseball. Without it, players are more likely to struggle. Baseball is a game of failure and it is important to nurture this confidence in young athletes. By placing athletes in challenging situations, we can help build and strengthen their confidence. Another effective way to do this is through teamwork. When players support and encourage each other, their confidence will grow.

Drills and Competitions to Develop Important Skills

Creating an effective and engaging training camp plan is essential for coaches to maximize player development. By incorporating a variety of competitive drills and scrimmages, coaches can simulate game-like scenarios, build team dynamics, and provide players with specific skill development opportunities. Here are some fun and effective team competition ideas for coaches to add to their daily camp sessions:

Coach Pitch Scrimmage

This is a fast-paced game on a clock, where the coach pitches to the players with specific goals in mind, simulating high-pressure game situations. This controlled environment allows the coach to pause the action and provide valuable feedback, making it an excellent teaching tool for refining decision-making and execution under pressure.

18 Outs Game

Split the team into two groups with live baserunners. The coaches will simulate the hitters with both teams switching between baserunning and fielding. The objective is for the defense to secure 18 outs against a pressing offense. This drill requires communication and teamwork, as players are constantly trying to force the offense into errors while simulating real game situations.

Position Olympics

Set up position-specific tasks where each player competes in different skill-based games. For instance, hitters compete to hit line drives, outfielders catching fly balls, infielders on fielding ground balls, and pitchers on accuracy. This gives players the chance to develop in their positions and gain confidence in their role within the team. Each player will rotate through different positions to improve their skills in all areas of the game.

Dirtball Reads

With a runner on any base, the catcher must block dirtballs to prevent the runner from advancing or scoring, while the runner anticipates and reads the play to decide whether to advance. This game develops base running instincts and sharpens defensive skills for catchers under pressure.

Wiffle Ball Home Run Derby

Divide the players into teams of 4-7, depending on the size of the camp. Each coach will oversee a section of the field. Position one team on offense and the other on defense near the fence. The defensive team’s goal is to prevent the ball from reaching the fence, while the offensive team tries to hit the ball over it. Players are out if the ball doesn’t make it to the fence, with 6 outs per half-inning.

Slip and Slide

Finish the camp with a fun and valuable drill—set up a slip and slide with plenty of water. Have the kids run up and practice sliding properly, teaching them the correct technique while ensuring they have a blast. It’s a great way to end the camp on a high note, combining fun with a key skill.

Game of Pickle

One of the classic baseball camp drills is pickle. Set up a fast-paced pickle drill to enhance baserunning instincts and situational awareness. Players rotate as runners and fielders, simulating game-like rundowns. This exercise is a fun way to sharpen decision-making, footwork, and teamwork under pressure.

Pitch Tunneling: How hitters can train to overcome it

Over the last few years, you’ve likely heard the term “Pitch Tunneling” during a broadcast, or seen it mentioned online. The concept itself isn’t new, and is something that great pitchers like Greg Maddux instinctively understood before it had a name. Developments in high-speed cameras, virtual reality, big data, and 3D modeling, have made it possible to visualize pitch tunneling (from the perspectives of the pitcher and hitter), and understand its effects. In 2017, after more than two years of work, Baseball Prospectus unveiled their research on what they termed pitch tunneling, and introduced it to the greater baseball community.

Elite Baseball Training: How VR transfers to the batter’s box

Since baseball began, undoubtedly its most difficult training challenge has been replicating in-game pitching conditions for hitters to practice against. Pitching is a scarce resource that is too valuable to waste on batting practice. Consequently, as players we practice against coaches throwing 50% of game speed, take “simulated” at-bats against teammates in scrimmages, and try to stay fresh at local batting cages. All the while doing this, we hope that it will transfer to helping us in actual game environments. While some of us may look great at our local batting cages, or against our coach’s lazily tossed batting practice,
